Benson’s history

Benson sits on Highway 47 between Estevan and Stoughton in southeastern Saskatchewan. Most of the early homesteaders in the area arrived between 1898 and 1902, and in 1909 the Rural Municipality of Benson No. 35 was incorporated.

The municipal offices were built in the community in 1923. On July 1, 1935, a tornado struck Benson, killing one person, injuring two and levelling several structures.

On August 12, 2003, the village of Benson was disorganized and became part of the RM of Benson No. 35. Today it is an unincorporated community with a curling rink, a community hall and the municipal offices of the RM.
